Improving Boating Safety on Roatan
ASEXUAL CORAL
RESTORATION
Improving the Health of Roatan's Marine Ecosystems
Coral Restoration aims to assist the recovery of coral species populations and restore reef health through sexual and asexual methods. Staghorn and elkhorn corals’ populations decreased dramatically in the 1980s due to disease.
As branching corals, they provide essential habitats for a range of species on the reef. They are also relatively fast growers and can reproduce asexually through fragmentation, making them suitable target species for the method of coral restoration that RMP is currently using in our program. We grow coral fragments on trees and tables installed in the ocean and then outplant them onto degraded areas of reef once they have grown large enough.

CORAL RESTORATION
CERTIFICATION
Are you interested in helping out with our coral restoration project? We have a course, especially for you!
The RMP Coral Restoration Certification Course has two versions: Adventurer and Ambassador.
• ADVENTURER
Learn all about coral restoration and the threats to coral reefs, and learn how to clean and monitor our coral nursery!
• AMBASSADOR
Everything in Adventurer, PLUS learn to outplant coral onto the reef!
The following dive centers currently offer the RMP Coral Restoration Certification Course, please contact them to book your course today!
Want to take the course but don’t want to change dive shops? Contact us at coralrestoration@roatanmarinepark.org
to see if we can send a freelance Coral Restoration Instructor
to your dive shop!
Want to support
our Efforts?
With your help, we will be able to continue and expand the Marine Park Coral Restoration Program. Your donation will help fund the installation of additional trees to grow our coral reef nursery, increase our planting areas, and help conserve Roatan's precious reef system.
On behalf of the RMP Team,
thank you for your donation!
Hug a Tree
Join us in supporting Roatan's coral restoration by adopting your Coral Tree*! Your contribution of $250 will help monitor and maintain the Coral nursery in Roatan Marine Park, which helps sustain the health of coral reefs.
We work hard to keep the nursery healthy and outplant healthy coral fragments onto the reef. As a token of appreciation, we'll attach a tag bearing your name or logo to the tree, and you'll have the chance to join us on one of our nursery dives to clean your very own tree! So, let's #hugacoraltree and make a tangible difference in the reef!
