Welcome to the Coral Restoration Center of Roatan

Advancing Reef Recovery Through Science, Innovation, and Passion

At the heart of the Mesoamerican Reef, the Coral Restoration Center of Roatán (CRCR) is a hub of cutting-edge marine science and hands-on conservation. Our mission is simple yet vital: to restore coral reef ecosystems through innovative techniques, research, and community engagement. Here, coral restoration isn’t just a dream. It’s a daily practice rooted in precision, care, and hope for the future of our oceans.

Our Facility: Three Core Systems Supporting Coral Life

Life Support System (LSS)
The Filtration Container

Think of this as the heart of the center. Our Life Support System is where high-quality seawater is filtered and carefully managed to support all restoration activities. From this container, clean seawater flows to every corner of the facility, ensuring the health of developing coral and the stability of our research systems. Every drop counts in creating the perfect environment for coral recovery.

Larval Rearing Cones (LRCs), Coral Resgtoration Center Roatan

Larval Rearing Cones (LRCs)
The Nursery Lab

This is where coral life begins. After coral spawning events, fertilized eggs are brought to our cone-shaped tanks, designed to give coral larvae the best chance of survival. Here, we conduct vital research and interventions that increase their resilience to stress, disease, and warming seas. It’s delicate, detailed work that helps set the stage for stronger, more adaptive coral reefs.

Raceways, Roatan Coral Restoration Center Roatan

Raceways
Where Corals Settle and Grow

Once the larvae are ready, they’re moved to our shallow raceways, long tanks that simulate natural conditions where young corals can attach to substrates and begin their next phase of life. These tanks provide a stable environment where corals can strengthen and prepare for transfer to nurseries or directly to the reef. Every coral that thrives here brings us closer to a restored marine ecosystem.
