Across Roatan, girls grow up walking distance from the Sea; yet many never get the chance to look beneath the surface, discover its ecosystems, or imagine themselves leading its protection. In 2025, the Roatan Marine Park set out to change that story by launching the Game Changers Club: Girls in Marine Science.

Instead of sitting in traditional classrooms, these young women dive straight into active conservation. Every week, they are out on the water; snorkeling vibrant coral reefs, exploring mangrove roots, touring local research labs and learning shoulder-to-shoulder with female mentors protecting the Bay Islands National Marine Park.

Because demand blew past our expectations, we officially expanded the program to Roatan’s East End. In these remote coastal communities, students gain hands-on training in marine protected areas and species conservation, transforming how they see the ocean: not just as a backdrop to daily life, but as a living ecosystem they have the power to safeguard.

National Recognition for Local Impact

This past April, the program earned national acclaim. The Game Changers Club was named Honduras’s winner of the prestigious Oscar Arnulfo Romero Human Rights Education Award, presented by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI); a huge honor recognizing our fusion of environmental education with gender equity in STEM.

The Real Transformation

Awards aside, the true victory is what happens on the boats and shorelines every week.

Our participants are asking sharper questions, speaking up with bold confidence during field research, and bringing conservation conversations back to their family dinner tables. Best of all? Several of these young women are now interested in full-time careers in marine science.

When you give young women the tools to explore, they don’t just learn about the ocean, they become its fiercest guardians.

Support the next generation of girls who will explore, protect, and lead the future of our ocean.
