Our First-Ever Girls in Marine Sciences Camp Was a Splashing Success!

Game Changers Club Roatan Marine Park

Something incredible unfolded this Holy Week: our first Girls in Marine Sciences Camp! Over a few unforgettable days, 28 girls ages 8 to 12 from Sandy Bay, Flowers Bay, West End, and neighboring communities became explorers, learners, and future ocean protectors.

Our campers, affectionately known as the Coral Cuties, Seagrass Sisters, and Wave Makers, dove into hands-on marine science through visits to our Coral Restoration Center, BICA’s water quality lab and mangrove nursery, and a tour of the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences.

In addition to meeting the incredible women from Under The Pole, a deep-sea research team in Roatan introduced the girls to exciting and lesser-known ocean career paths, opening their minds to a world of possibilities rarely discussed on the island.

We also hiked to the peek of Carambola Botanical Gardens, learning about Roatan’s rich plant life during a scenic hike to the peak, taking time to appreciate all the ecosystems that make our island so special.

Beachside Yoga

The next day, we took a moment for beachside yoga and self-empowerment sessions, helping the girls connect with their bodies, minds, and the natural world.

Treasures from the Seas Session

Creativity flowed during our recycled art session led by Treasures from the Seas. The girls first learned about plastic pollution and then transformed non-recyclable materials into unique and beautiful art pieces. Even the adult volunteers couldn’t resist joining in, it turned into one of the most energetic and hands-on moments of the entire week!

Fish ID and Snorkeling Adventure

To top it all off, our final day brought everything full circle with a fish ID session and snorkeling adventure, where the girls could see the marine life and ecosystems they had been learning about all week. There’s nothing like swimming alongside corals and colorful fish to inspire awe, understanding, and a deeper appreciation for the ocean. Some girls pointed out parrotfish and even squids made a surprise appearance.

The Game Changers Camp was more than just a camp, it was the start of a movement. It showed these young girls that they belong in science, that their voices matter, and can lead with heart and purpose.

We are incredibly proud of the growth we witnessed: shy voices becoming confident, new friendships forming over shared passions, and broken barriers as they listened to trailblazing women working hard to make the sciences more inclusive. These girls left feeling inspired, confident, and more connected to nature than ever before.
We’re proud of every Coral Cutie, Seagrass Sister, and WaveMaker who joined us—and we can’t wait to see where the tide takes them next.
