With the arrival of SECORE, CAL, GIZ and co-managers we were able to start our coral spawning monitoring!! Today we were able to start assembling the first Coral Rearing In-situ Basin (CRIB) in Honduras with the support of SECORE. This CRIB will function as a protection for the substrates that will be found inside it, substrates whose purpose is to function as settlements where coral larvae can attach and grow. The CRIB will be installed at Half Moon Bay, inside the swimming zone. This installation will only be in place for 3 weeks, during a time in which we will be able to ensure that the coral larvae are attach and growing, with the final step being to transplant them to the reef.

Con la llegada de SECORE, CAL, GIZ y co-manejadores damos inicio a nuestra semana de desove de corales. El día de hoy se inició el ensamblaje de la primer CRIB en Honduras con apoyo de SECORE. Esta CRIB funcionará como una protección para los sustratos que se encontrarán en el interior de este, sustratos cuyo propósito tienen para funcionar como fijadores donde las larvas de coral podrán adherirse y crecer. El CRIB se instaló en Half Moon Bay, dentro de la zona de nado. Esta instalación solo estará por 3 semanas, periodo en que podremos asegurar que las larvas de coral pudieron adherirse y crecer, dando como último paso trasplantarlos al arrecife.

The CRIB is ready! Today we were able to install the CRIB. We are getting ready to restore our reefs. We cleaned 1008 substrates that will go inside the CRIB, they will serve as coral larvae settlements. We also started with our coral spawning monitoring, monitoring the species Orbicella annularis (OANN) and Orbicella faveolata (OFAV), being OANN our focal species for reproduction. These monitoring will be during all this week until Saturday 17th with two teams, one in the water ready to collect gametes if spawning and the second one ready in the lab for assisted fertilization. We also have the purpose of validating the first coral spawning prediction calendar that will work for future monitorings and reproduction.

¡El CRIB está listo! Hoy se logró instalar el CRIB y nos estamos preparando para poder restaurar nuestros arrecifes. Se realizó la limpieza de los 1008 sustratos que irán dentro del CRIB que servirán como asentamientos de corales. Al igual iniciamos con nuestros monitoreo de desove de coral, monitoreando las especies Obricella annularis (OANN) y Obricella faveolata (OFAV), siendo OANN nuestra especie focal para su reproducción. Estos monitoreo serán durante toda esta semana hasta el sábado 17, también tienen como propósito de poder validar el primer calendario de predicción en desove de corales que funcionará para futuros monitoreo.

We continue with our coral spawning monitoring of OANN and OFAV. Today we had the opportunity to give a workshop to the different international organizations and co-managers on coral spawning gamete collection nets. The nets were prepared from scratch, showing the step-by-step creation of these nets and how to place them properly on the reef.

Continuamos con nuestros monitoreos de desove de coral en OANN y OFAV. Hoy se dio la oportunidad de impartir un workshop a las diferentes organizaciones internacionales y co-manejadores sobre las redes recolectoras de gametos para desove de coral. Se prepararon redes desde cero, mostrando el paso a paso de la creación de estas redes y cómo colocarlas en el arrecife apropiadamente.

THE CORALS SPAWNED! We are very happy to share with you that we were able to perform the assisted fertilization. Our nets were able to collect gametes from five Orbicella annularis (OANN) colonies, giving us the opportunity to achieve the first assisted fertilization at our coral restoration center. Once fertilization was done, the fertilized gametes were dropped at the CRIB in Half Moon Bay, where the coral larvae will be able to settle on the substrates.
We also had the opportunity today to share with SECORE, CAL, GIZ,and NGOs, different presentations about the work of each one towards the reef. It was an afternoon of knowledge and projects that will bring new hope for our reefs

¡LOS CORALES DESOVARON! Estamos muy felices de poder compartir con ustedes que se pudo realizar la fertilización asistida. Nuestras redes lograron recolectar gametos de cinco colonias de Orbicella annularis (OANN), dándonos la oportunidad de realizar la fertilización asistida en el centro de restauración de coral. Una vez realizada la fertilización, los gametos fecundados fueron arrojados en el CRIB, en Half Moon Bay, donde las larvas de coral podrán asentarse en los sustratos.
También tuvimos la oportunidad hoy de compartir con SECORE, CAL, GIZ,y ONGs, diferentes presentaciones sobre el trabajo de cada una hacia el arrecife. Fue una tarde de conocimientos y proyectos que traerán nuevas esperanzas para nuestros arrecifes.

The next step for the coral restoration program.... MICROFRAGMENTATION. Today we received a presentation on micro fragmentation in corals, BICA and Fundación Cayos Cochinos, were able to share their experiences in the Dominican Republic and the micro fragmentation techniques they learn that will help implement this method to our coral restoration projects in Honduras.

El siguiente paso para el programa de restauración de corales…MICROFRAGMENTATION. El día de hoy se recibió una presentación sobre micro fragmentación en corales, BICA y Fundación Cayos Cochinos lograron compartir sus experiencias en República Dominicana y las técnicas de micro fragmentación que lograron aprender a modo de poder utilizar este método en nuestros programas de restauración de corales en Honduras.

We said goodbye to our co-managers. It has been a week of hard work and very satisfying results, corals spawned and are now ready to settle and grow giving new hope to rebuild our reefs. This great event could be carried out thanks to the participation of GIZ, SECORE International, California Academy of Science, BICA, Marfund, Tela Marine, Fundación Cayos Cochinos, Mi ambiente, ICF, Marina Mercante, Roatan Municipality and Anthony´s Key Resort, who help us to collect gametes and do the fertilization.

Nos despedimos de nuestros co-manejadores. Ha sido una semana de arduo trabajo y muy satisfactoria debido a que los corales desovaron y ahora ya están listos para asentarse y poder crecer brindando nuevas esperanzas a poder reconstruir nuestros arrecifes. Este gran evento se pudo llevar a cabo gracias a SECORE International, California Academy of Science, BICA, Marfund, Tela Marine, Fundación Cayos Cochinos, Mi ambiente, ICF, Marina Mercante, Municipalidad de Roatán y Anthony´s Key Resort, quienes nos apoyaron a poder recolectar los gametos y realizar la fertilización.
