How it works

We use photographs of the skin patterning of the pelvic fins and the surrounding area as a tool to identify between individuals of a spotted eagle ray. This pattern of dorsal spots is unique for each organism which allows us to use software to support rapid identification and as a photo management tool.

We seek to understand more about the population of eagle rays and their movements using photographic identification, that way we can build a database of the species observed in Roatán and in the rest of the MPA. Through research, we aim to help the conservation and management of this vulnerable species.

Take photos

Eagle rays have unique patterns of rings or spots in their pelvic fins. Get an image or video of the pelvic fins or the area near the tail. This will help us identify each individual. This is the most important type of photo for our database. Image: Source Cerutti et al, 2017.
