cut down on single use plastics

Humanity's irresponsible handling of single use plastics is a global crisis that is flooding our oceans and choking our marine life. Being a small island, the challenges we face with ocean debris is enormous. With a rising population of over 80,000 people and over 1 million cruise ship visitors each year alone, Roatan lacks the municipal infrastructure and economic resources to support the amount of pollution we produce each year. Our landfill is constantly over-flowing into river streams and the sea. As a result, trash and plastic toxins are commonly found all around the reef and inside sea turtles, fish, and other marine animals as they often mistake garbage for food. These plastic toxins are inside the fishes that end up on your plate and in your body. While buying plastic items may be financially cheaper than eco alternatives, the environmental and human cost is much higher. It takes over 1,000 years for plastic to break down in the ocean, consider if it is worth holding it in your hand for just one minute?

The Roatan Marine Park seeks to combat these challenges by providing eco alternatives to anyone seeking to cut down on their carbon footprint. RMP supplies alternatives to plastic and styrofoam straws, cups, cutlery, trays, and more in our ecostore located in Half Moon Bay. Together with the local business community we have made strides in reducing our single use plastic and styrofoam waste, but there is still much work to be done. Let's make Roatan pristine again.

How You Can Help

Each and everyone of us can do our bit to reduce the demand for single use plastic and the waste that we produce. If you are ordering a drink ask without a straw. At a local grocery shop, bring your own bags. Less than 1% of bags are recycled, believe us you are making an impact. A recently washed up shark died purely from plastic consumption. Check out our shop, shopping for items such as reusable bags not only reduces you environmental impact but also contributes financially to our conservation efforts. Please always stay hydrated but always carry a refillable bottle.
