Challenges in the hunting season
At the beginning of last year we were on track for having our busiest year training and licensing lionfish hunters. However when tourism ground to a halt, a total of only 240 snorkelers and divers were taught how to remove the invasive species in 2020. With the lack of hunters actively removing lionfish, their numbers rapidly increased and towards the end of the year hunting season was definitely open. With tourism slowly returning to the island, we are beginning to reclaim the reefs and with 100 new hunters so far this year, the lionfish's days will once again be numbered.
